Just got back from the Ruhrfestspiele festival in Germany, Vesturport was there to perform R&J at the Schauspielhaus in Recklinghausen, in German!

As usual Börkur and Hlynur managed to perform a minor miracle by rigging and building the set in about 36 hours

With some help from the German Stage hand Robots...

Menwhile I tackled a problem of my own, the new program or play-bill, which I had done the layout and design for, got f-ed up in the printshop, the cover was missing the letters R&J... which should have been there... but for some reason were not... There was nothing to do but set up a worktable outside the theatre, create a stencil and spraypaint each cover by hand... 1000 programs...

Yes Hermann mine... like Dengsi used to say.

In the end I think that the program was better off with my graffiti, "Handmade by Jesus, make them pay extra" my brother Gulli said, because I play Jesus on the show, you see

As well as Tybalt... the Ratcatcher...

It's been a while since I did the old acrobat routine, (Tampere theatre festival last summer) and of course aching muscles, swollen joints and cramps set in almost immediately, I even thought I was getting afraid of heights but that soon wore off. The stage in Recklinghausen was the highest I have played with R&J - 8m height for the tissue stunts... sweaty palms not welcome, so just keep cool, and get a grip...

We were doing the play in German... "Sauerkraut in meinem lederhosen, zwei eier hardgekocht und ein knockwurst, ja mein Helmut" Now I learned some German in school and I don't have that much text in the show so I was not really that stressed out by the conversion but I felt for some of my friends, like Vikingur Kristjansson who has several long monologues and opens up the play with a bit of stand up, in German, which he does not speak at all, god bless him.

To counter the stresseffect and provide relief, we bought a mascot - Otto the Donkey...

...Yes it's an inflatable Donkey complete with hole in the rear...

Others seemed quite relaxed and eager to show off their wunderbar German skillz

10 minutes to a german performance of R&J...

Juliet helps her nurse get into the drag outfit...

Benvolio, which Nanna Kristín, played for this run, looking for his/her flashlights...

Eurovision song contest finalist Selma played... Lady Capulet.

And outside the sun was shining and the temperature was up to 33 degrees C. And the german fußballteam was about to kick off for the first game of the Fußballweltmeisterschaft 2006... which the stagehands were not going to miss, so they set up a tv backstage... I kid you not.

And then - Showtime!

Vikingur kicked our show off with his German standup, which incredibly had the audience roaring with laughter before long... incredibly because, well germans and their humour... well, for example, Jesus was evidently not nearly as funny in Germany as he was in England... someone said it's because there are more catholics in Germany, I don't know, I was quite surprised. To me Jesus is funny, especially when he comes on stage smoking a joint, or does Yoga or plays the guitar, or eats a Banana... Jesus is coming... act busy.

In total we performed six times to an audience of 7000 bewildered Germans in the Schauspielhaus Recklinghausen and had a great time inbetween...

The Whitesnake brothers got some tan

Arni P. almost got himself thrownout at the wonderful Maritimo spa for too expressive posing.

Ingvar got himself a new cut for his beard, and a new attitude to go along with it..

And Nanna got a piggybackride... And then it was time for the final performance and wrap before heading home.

Coming up: Woyzeck in the Barbican for a second run, Surf goes to Copenhagen for the Scandinavian theatre awards, R&J in Polland and Peer Gynt in Oslo...
